Speaker: ‎Matthew Roberts, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer, NBTY, Inc.

In 2015 Matthew Roberts, Ph.D., was appointed to a newly-created role of Chief Scientific Officer for NBTY, Inc., a global manufacturer, marketer, distributor and retailer of vitamins and nutritional supplements. He leads NBTY’s innovation efforts by creating and executing product development strategies, enhancing product offerings, and driving product advancements.

With more than 20 years of experience in the product development field, Matthew comes to NBTY from Abbott Nutrition, where he was Divisional Vice President of Global Product Research and Development. Previously, Matthew spent more than 10 years with Nestle, where he was responsible for new product introductions, ventures, and major acquisitions. He has served on the Board of Vet Centric and was a member of the Nestle Purina Pet Care’s Global Strategic Business Unit.

As a Ph.D. research scientist, he managed laboratories focused on life science research, bioanalytical methods development, genomics, proteomics, and nutritional discovery. He is the author of 34 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 11 professional publications, five patents, and the editor of two scientific books. Matthew has been a member of NCN’s Screening Committee since 2008.

Consumers desire for increased protein consumption through formats from nutrition bars and beverages to sports products has encouraged much of the recent M&A and private investment activity in the dietary supplement and functional foods sectors. Additionally, the volatility of raw material prices and interest in sustainability have led to diversification of the protein marketplace from whey and soy to many forms of plant-based proteins. Industry changes offer opportunities for investors in foods, supplements, ingredients, biotech and acquirers in F&B, ingredients and pharma. This presentation offers insights into recent M&A and investment activities among “protein-centric” companies with a look at what it may mean for continued industry growth.
